That is standard in US schools even the kids are trained how to use them and they are in most sports venues and public places.

How expensive would that be to introduce that to this country? I know in amateur and professional boxing there are always paramedics ringside with a st johns parked outside just in case there's a nasty knock out etc.

Great Story

Systems are put in place for a reason

If this occurred in UK that kid would be dead

Commotio Cordis can be fatal but as shown is this story if treated in a timely manner with an AED an individual can make a full recovery.

I guess we would have to wait until someone has a tragedy before anything is done in this Country.

You'd hope that at National School's Competition or Lacrosse Camps for Juniors that AEDs would be available

Dave is right, here in the UK the player would be dead. I love the idea of having a unit on the side lines. But the reality is we cannot even get teams to have a first aid kit on the sideline or trainer who could help with injuries. This would be a big ask. Not to say we should not aspire to it though.

I am a big proponent of introducing mandatory chest protection as part of the required equipment for all players. This can help prevent such injuries.

Don, I agree with what you're saying there, but from the Wikipedia article it says that chest protectors provide a false sense of security. The lower threshold for cardiac arrest is 50J, and with lacrosse balls producing up to 130J, it's a fairly big ask to reduce that impact down to a 'safe' level.

Can't say for sure whether the AED would also give that same false sense of security. I think the we should take the lead of the NCAA who has many more resources at their disposal to determine the value in using chest prototection. Nothing is fail proof, but we would will at least help mitigate the situation. For those that want a fail safe system then I need a rules nomination to move to nerf balls!!

I know that last season I took a ball in the chest off a shot on goal. And befor you say it, no I was not working too close to the goal. The shooter just could not control his shot!! I would have been safer standing beside the goalie in that game. My biggest concern at the time was what happened to the kid. Suffice to say I was okay, but it really did bring home the importance of having chest protection if nothing else to dull the shot.
