What are peoples views on who's going to win it in D1?
Hopkins scraped past Brown, whilst North Carolina just beat UMBC.
What about the other matchup's? I'd love to see Duke v Syracuse in the semis.

February/March form might not be applicable when judging this NCAA tournament. Yesterday's results were tight, as if nerves might be playing a part, and Syracuse have added a weapon to their team. If the final is Virginia v Syracuse then the focus of attention might take away V's strengths, a bit like Chelsea obsessing about Messi and sacrificing attacking intent.
Any gossip on broadcast of the games?

Virginia vs Johns Hopkins

Postby davewilliams Mon May 11, 2009 11:54 pm

I know a highlights clip can distort the picture of a game but both defences (Brown vs JHU) looked shot from the beginning. The JHU keeper looks good in a crisis but he could get shell-shock from Virginia next week.

(Just got to find film of the Syracuse attack now, although the news feed says the Orange defence beat up Siena before the goals started to flow. Maybe the coaching team is trying to toughen up the back end of the team during these preliminaries).

Final Four

Postby davewilliams Sun May 17, 2009 10:58 pm

Thanks.
Cornell vs Virginia
Syracuse vs Duke

How did Cornell beat Princeton? Are Syracuse holding back their offensive playbook? Are Duke below form? It's looking good for Virginia vs Syracuse final.

Final four :

Syracuse vs Duke
Virginia vs Cornell

'Cuse to take the title again. Though if Virginia play like they did against Hopkins then should be a quality game.

Syracuse vs Duke semi final

Postby davewilliams Mon May 18, 2009 10:19 am

The Duke coach Danowski scouted Syracuse in their game with Maryland and was pretty obvious. I hope Syracuse held back their offence by doing just enough; heavy emphasis on ride and man-on-man D gave Orange most of the possession with forced turnovers. The only success achieved by the Maryland front three was two assists, and their star man played the whole game for no result against Syd Smith.
Duke, on the other hand, had to pull out all the stops to get past North Carolina, with Ned Crotty busting a gut as a one man offence. Duke switched to a zone D to cause some adjustment problems for NC, but they are probably disappointed with the result in such a close game.
The coaches have been playing public chess with these early games; I hope that Syracuse are preparing Syd Smith to snuff out Crotty and use a few more of their attack plays next week.

Eamon get a group together and give a local sports bar a call. I am sure most would be happy to put the matches on for the uni team in a booth or two as long as people are eating and drinking.

That's what we did last year.

Syracuse vs Duke semi final

Postby davewilliams Sat May 23, 2009 10:25 am

I'm not going to see this live, but reporters have been going into detail on the practise sessions and walk-throughs at the venue. This could be a really close game, with emphasis on closing down attacking players. Syracuse could have a slight advantage on ground ball wins and transition out of defence; then Duke's long sticks' habit is to get out and disrupt with complex variations of slides. Can someone let me know if Keogh gets around this tactic by feeding with bounce passes? I presume the playing surface is either synthetic or just predictable enough for this to be safe. Ta.
