Checking From Behind

Postby Piggy #13 Thu Nov 08, 2007 9:07 pm

Whats the ruling on this one?
In some games it's called up, in others it's not
Some people say you can check from behind in a womens match
And yet some others other say you can't!
Ideas on this one please? :?

I think the important thing is the control of the check and also the level of the game.

I've only ever reffed lower level BUSA games and anything that even looks uncontrolled or a check when the player could not see the the stick I've called. and other refs have done pretty much the same. But at the womens territorials there were a lot more risky checks that the players wernt called for because they knew what they were doing and executed the check cleanly and accurately.

to be sum it up in really simple terms....

you can check from 360 degrees (including behind) if the stick is hanging out! as long as its controlled (so not a swipe), and you dont break any other fouls such as: across the body, head-check, barging, stick on body etc
"Train to win, Play to win" "Shoot first. Ask questions later"

"the way to beat a tight crease is a quick stick"

It's not the team with the best athletes, it's the athlete's with the best team

I am a district rated women's ref and have heard this called wrong many times.
"checking from behind" is NOT a foul and refs should refrain from using such terminology.
it is possible to make a legal check from behind a player.
What might be called is:
"rough Check"
"checking across the body"
Check to the head"
Check to the body"
Or and check where the act of checking causes the checker's or ball holders stick to go into their sphere wich for lack of finding a better way to put it you can always call it a "dangerous check"
