buying from the us!!!

Postby tea leaf Sun Aug 17, 2008 3:31 pm

hey all, gettin paid soon so thought i may buy some gear from the us.

i remember wen i bought my stick i ended up gettin taxed on it wen it arrived in the uk...therefore paying around £30ish more. i kno not everything gets taxed on entry to the uk and i dnt mind paying either.

i just wanted to kno if anyone has bought multiple items at the same time from abroad, and wanted to know if they taxed every single item or it as a bundle as items??? because i dnt really wunna pay tax on four seperate items... thats just silly!

You will be taxed on the total cost of the parcel when it arrives. This will be at 17.5% unless you have included something which attracts a higher rate, such as T-shirts which I think are 20% ish.

I've seen UPS tax an entire parcel at 20% because it included 1 T-Shirt, you can call them and appeal the tax and they will sort it out.

Please read the other threads on tax for more info......

With regards tax - watch out. depending on the courier you sometimes get a letter a few months later. With DHL for some reason they thought I was a business and sent me all the tax for all the parcels I'd had delivered at the end of the financial year

I got a helmet from the US a few months ago and haven't been taxed yet, I've now moved house as well so I may never receive the letter telling me if i have to pay it

Just imported about $300 worth of stuff from foot locker, came within about a week and got charged £27.84 in V.A.T. Package had t-shirt, shorts, boots etc.in it but didn't get any extra taxes beyond the vat.

I'm still waiting for some stuff sent over six weeks ago. I've not received a customs thing through from Royal Mail yet but I'm guessing it's been stopped at customs. Anyone had any experience of how to confirm this?

Find out the tracker number issued to the company that shipped it. This way you can see where the parcel is. Sometimes customs take ages to send out the letter and it will have been with the parcel company so long they return to sender.

That's happened to me and it sucks ASS!

Just out of curiosity,

where are you buying from in the US (store or private seller), that makes it worthwhile given the shipping costs and the poor exchange rate? Or is it something you cant get in the UK?

Most people on this thread were probably doing it when exchange rate were good. Now I think it might be hard to make it viable unless buying from private sellers...

Even with buying from private sellers, the exchange rate is making it a lot less competative. Glad i got my stuff last year when it was a lot more favourable!

Not least cos the exchange rate means packages hit the tax threshold much easier :s

If your package is shipped by USPS, they use parcelforce when it gets to the uk.
However parcelforce, for their pleasure, add a £8 'handling fee' if any customs charges are applied (apparently £13.50 for very expensive packages)

My missus had the same problem with some stuff she ordered from the states, got in contact with the company she ordered it from who were completely unaware that USPS did that, and they refunded her the handling fee and changed their international carrier. Might be worth a shot...

Give it a go but changing their international carrier is unlikely to do much good as whereas USPS has (an albeit low) threshold, UPS and the like will charge you regardless of the goods' value and it's about the same amount, if not slightly more.
