I've watched some of the games and have been wondering about this. Is this a result of our domestic game? Are we allowed to get away with way more things our club matches?

Initially I thought it was a natural result of having more referees (usually see more penalties at the nationals) but Spain aside we are racking up far more penalties.

I don't think England are a dirty team, it's just they are playing the way they are normally allowed to and this is being judged as unacceptable by the officials.

Not seen much as I've struggled with the 24/7 website however:


Midfield fouls - are they playing an aggressive ride?
Defensive fouls - Knowing Coach Cugno he will have them pressing - I have no doubt once he is happy with the set-up he will stamp out fouls for later in the competition.
If these fouls were causing teams to get back in to games I sure they would stop immediately.

There are some really harsh calls...and a lot of deserved calls as as well...

some good physical checks are being called up as slashes...
lots of 'roughing' calls...
there have been a lot of calls on players that have run into other players but couldnt stop...
some really good hits on the sideline, but the reffs are calling them up as the fences are so close to the sideline (less than a meter)
also not all fouls are being communicated before play re-starts leaving the bench unsure of whats going on....and then getting a delay of the game call...

but also, there are some good calls, England are just a physical and aggressive team and go after the ball a lot

Good of you to think of Stockport but considering they have more players in the squad Pom theres every chance someone from the club will get penalised at some point. There has not been anything untoward from any player, most of the calls would not happen in the Prem, that's the general opinion of those watching the games live.
They are there to do a job and so far they've done what was needed, I'm sure the coaches will be working on reducing the time spent on the bench now that they are in the knockout stage.
The fact that Tom Willy and Baxter have had pens tells you something, I can't remember the last time either had a penalty at stockport, can you?

Interesting to see so many of the penalties coming from the attackers!
Would I be right to interpret this as riding too hard or are there other reasons for the attackers pulling fouls?

I've only watched two of the games (Ireland and Germany) and the refs have been pretty flag-happy in those. Having said that, many of the penalties have been avoidable, especially when you know how the game is going to be refereed. First game (Ireland) - "OK lads, we'll let you off those first few as it looks like these refs are going to be pretty tight on anything after the ball"

Germany game - no excuse really for the late stuff apart from when it's actually been impossible to stop going through with the hit.

Interesting, as Mr Room says, that Coach Cugno has his pressing / aggressive style. My interpretation is that some of the lads in the team are feeling the freedom of being let off the reigns and being allowed to throw checks. The overriding style of Coach Wenham was very much more conservative and focussed on containment. Both styles have their merits.

Ultimately, I think Dalglish said it, whatever it is it's working so why change it? Maybe the benefits of unsettling the oppo with the aggressive style outweigh the negatives of the man down. I can't remember seeing that many extra-man goals in the two games I've seen (apart from comical two-man-zone-gate).

But if the Euro's are a stepping stone to the World Champs - not saying they are but if I was placed to lead a team to a major event like the Worlds I would use the Euro's as a stepping stone - then surely they cannot use this free style against nations like Australia, Japan or god-forbid USA & Canada, as they will get punished there. So therefore not using it here would be better.

Why not try a more aggressive style of defence in the worlds, changing things up, trying new thing doesn't mean the previous style was wrong just different!

All good stuff, I've watched all the Blue Group games and so may have a slightly different perspective

England are not subtle on defense

There are a number of players with NCAA experience or Ice Hockey experience in these games

the Motto seems to be "Don't get Mad - Get even!"

And England are falling for it every time, there are shenanigans going on off ball and instead of taking numbers and looking out for them next time some players have been guilty of rising to the bait

The 2nd or 3rd man in will always get the flags as a lot of the time the refs are watching the ball.

Also you need to play with control, no matter how aggressive you play (which I'm a fan of) you need to have discipline and control of what you are doing.

Overall though, England have been FUN to watch and actually look like they are enjoying themselves

England's lacrosse has been entertaining and bright; playing to nullify opponents' strengths, eg, Ryan Mayerberg taking the Finnish captain to remove the feed/crease threat, and the pursuit of Germany's front six to stamp out the set-piece stack-attack. At times England have pressed the ball all over the field, and have then had the legs to attack strongly when possession has been retrieved.
The only risk is complacency or new tactics by their semi-final opponents. No England squad injuries?
