My son has a place at Sheffield Uni starting this coming October. He is now looking at his options for accommodation and I was wondering if any of the Sheffield Uni members of the forum have any thoughts on the best halls to apply for.
Any help much appreciated.

Re: Sheffield Uni - any accommodation recommendations
I was in Carrysbrook Court which is the newer part of Stevenson Halls. It was class. Rooms were a bit small but very clean and moden and everyone had ensuite bathrooms. Stevo also had it's own bar. Was within 5mins walking distance of Broomhill (including the infamous Notty House) and 15 mins walk to Uni and town.
I know there has been recent developments though so people who are there at present are probably your best bet as I graduated in 2008.

Re: Sheffield Uni - any accommodation recommendations
My brothers currently in his first year, and he is at ranmoor, really nice accomodation, the only problem I can see is that its at the top of a big hill, and im pretty sure if i was hungover walking back from uni it would look like mount everest.

Re: Sheffield Uni - any advice on halls
8 years since I left and my old flats have been knocked down; but there is a new complex called Endcliffe Village. I think this is the place to be:

Current students will tell you more I am sure.

Re: Sheffield Uni - any accommodation recommendations
I would recommend Ranmoor or Endcliffe as that's where the majority of first years live and most of the accommodation is less than 4 years old - Ranmoor village was only built two years ago. They are both at the top of a hill but pretty much everywhere in sheffield is! Both villages are about 20 mins walk from uni, 5 mins from Broomhill and about half an hour from town though you can get the bus.
There are halls in the city centre but I don't really know much about them.
Hope that helps.

I think most would agree with this - aim to be near Broomhill rather than the city centre as Broomhill is like the hub of student activity outside the actual university. It's full of pubs, take aways and shops but has a "village" feel to it.

And living at the top of a hill means walking down to lectures with a hang over is much easier!

Yeah. Great course. Good learning environment and one of the best Sports Engineering departments in the country (links with Adidas and the LTA). That was then though.
The walk to Mappin St is about 30 minutes down from Broomhill but it's with the (hungover) walking traffic. The walk back is a nightmare up that hill but, again, everyone is in it together.
If you need any specific advice on Mech Eng or anything else let me know by PM. Happy to help.
Dave.
