Ashton A v Newcastle

Postby Koyunbaba Sat Oct 25, 2008 6:26 pm

Short Story Newcastle won. about 7-3 or 7-4 ish something like that.

The longer story is that this was my first game in attack for 7 years and was glad of a run out. However,it wasn't a jolly and Newcastle made it a very difficult game for us. They played quite a high pressure defence, which forced the issue when we did manage to get the ball into attack. We just couldn't settle down because they were pressing us so far out and this told with countless handling errors turning the ball over. I say when we did get the ball into attack because Newcastle dominated on the ground ball. They were younger fitter and better handling players than us and they just mopped up the ground balls on what was a horrible Ashton pitch. They then played prolonged periods of settled well organised attack and eventually started to make the pressure pay by taking the lead late in the first quarter and never relinquishing it. It was my first game in the fifth division and i was impressed by the standard of the play i saw from Newcastle today. They were also a great bunch of lads and it was a pleasure playing them, even under the awful pitch conditions we had today. Good luck to the Newcastle lads for the rest of the season, though i don't think they'll need it.

All the best

Cheers pal. Was a strange game to be honest due predominantly to the muddy pitch. Your 6 man zone in D caused us quite a bit of trouble, very disciplined, was impressed. I'm pretty sure the final score was 6-3, and to be honest, I'm looking forward to seeing you guys up in the Toon in January - you seem like a good bunch of guys, and we'll definitely have a pitcher with your name on it.

Good luck between now and then,

Heaton Mersey

Prem:
Boardman & Eccles 4 Heaton Mersey 18

Div2:
Heaton Mersey A 9 Ashton 6

Div 3:
Timperley A 15 Heaton Mersey B 5

Div5:
Heaton Mersey C 2 Birmingham City 8

The Birmingham guys turned up late due to M6 traffic and we played a shortened game, Heaton Mersey were 2-0 up after 5 mins but then the students got the journey out of their legs and dominated the rest of the game, They were fitter, faster, younger and pressed the ball all over the field, they were getting 2 or 3 men to every GB and Rick Wilson (CJLax's little Bro) made 20+ saves in Goal for Brum. Ex-Oldham player Steve Shawmarsh-Smith got a hat-trick in attack & Woody / Mike Barlow & Max Lopez scored from Midfield.
Phil Davis (17) played well in Goals for Heaton Mersey but he must have felt like King Canute trying to hold back wave after wave of transition attacks from the students who simply over ran the Heaton Mersey Middies.
There were a number of cry-offs this morning in higher teams which meant that Heaton Mersey C were only a mere shell of the team that played last week.... all that was left was the old and the infirm

Congratualations to the Birmingham guys who are a great bunch of blokes, safe journey home and I hope all the D5 teams travel to Brum to play these guys so they can have a full season in the first year as a Lacrosse Club :D

Special mention should be made to their performance in the bar as:-
Skipper Mike Barlow did his Yard of Ale in fine style and took his punishment
Goalie Rick Wilson made the Classic Schoolboy Error of choosing a Yard of Lager with the usual outcome
And the Legend who is Seb Shead did his Yard in just over 2mins, then asked for a pint of lager from the jug to sort himself out  Top Performance ImageImageImage

Good Luck for the rest of the Season in D5 8)

U12s:
Timperley B 13 Heaton Mersey 8 :-
Lucas #21 + Edward Loveland (age 7) played well for Timperley along with their Goalie. Caius Jefferies (Swede) & Ben Smith play well for Mersey.

U14s:
Heaton Mersey 1 Timperley A 25

U16s:
Heaton Mersey - Won! :D
