<p>&quot;IT was the perfect record,&quot; began this magazine's report of Ray Booty's epic sub-four hour '100' in the rain in August 1956. Editor George Pearson's words, read 56 years later, captured the excitement of that historic moment in the 58th Bath Road Club '100', the premier time trial on the calendar: &quot;...the familiar figure of Booty flashed past the time keeper in what everybody knew to be inside four hours. The minutes and seconds did not matter; he was cheered and clapped to a standstill, shaken by the hand a thousand times, buried' in a crowd of well-wishers for half-an-hour, wrapped in a raincoat because his clothing was temporarily missing, and came out of it all with a series of diplomatic replies of exemplary modesty that must have concealed a wonderful feeling of elation.&quot;</p>
<p>When interviewed a few years ago, he recalled he had been working in the Bath Road area near Reading the previous week, but driven home to Nottingham in his ��20 clapped out Singer,which had a top speed of 53mph, rather than stick around over the weekend until Monday!</p>

<p>Asked why, he replied: &quot;Because, I suppose, I just wanted to ride down [an estimated 120 miles]. So I got back to Nottingham and promptly turned round and set off back again. Seems crackers doesn't it?</p>
<p>&quot;It was a three-day weekend, so it was a natural thing to do. The bike was a form of transport, really. Back then, it was not something only to be raced on. And at my age, you were fanatical about your sport so you seek every opportunity to ride.&quot;</p>
<p>He thinks he may have left his racing wheels at this digs near Reading, but couldn't be sure.</p>
<p>&quot;In those days riders would ride their heavy wheels to an event, with their lighter sprints and tubs on carriers either side of the front wheel.&quot;</p>
<p>The day before the '100', Booty and others went to the cinema. What did he see?</p>
