I mention it because a Syracuse defenseman was killed in a game just a couple of years ago. Caused some serious equipment reevaluation in the States, but I don't think any real changes were made. He was wearing the bare minimum legal shoulder pads and the impact point was high enouhg that more substantial pads could have saved his life.

the most painful I've had was on my ear, I'd just turned my head for a split second to follow a cutter in front of goal when someone fired a shot in, it hit slap bang in that bit of the ear that has no padding on and man did it sting.
I'm thinking of getting some proper shoulder pads to avoid getting killed by a shot but i think I'm unlikely to meet anyone who shoots that hard in Southern West league

I have to say that I do like it when the defence get in the way of the ball as long as my entire vision is not blocked. also robs hit on the helmet was frickin AMAZING. I had just turned the camera off on low battery and was GUTTED.
As a goalie you take the most hits on the team with a ball (normally) but hats off to d-men when taking a shot. I couldn't do it
oh wait I do
awsome

For those Uni teams that play mens, womens and mixed lacrosse, I come from a purely mixed lacrosse background and defending against players that shoot the ball at 90mph without the defence wearing any protection, gets a bit scary. Especially being a girl (when youve got a 6 foot muscle pack thundering towards you!)...but i can take a fair few shots before it scares me to one side!
Been in defence for 2 and a half years for Staffs and havent scored a single goal! You gotta follow Captains word though and i must admit, i dont regret not going up front. I got a mouth on me to get the other team members in order so when you're at back, it comes in handy (and you gotta be loud sometimes to put attackers off!)

Get yerself a glass of wine!
At Cardiff, in mixed, we rotate the defensive midfielders with the defence so the straight defenders (predominantly me and Ian) can go over the half way line to add to our goal tallies. Works too. Ian, I think gets about 2 or 3 a game and I average a goal a game. Damn Swansea ruined my 100% shots to goals ratio although that record was absolutely ruined in the Bristol game when I couldnt hit a barn door from five paces

recently ive been stopping shots with my stick instead! which twice have lead to two rather nice goals! for the other team
most painful, has to be a shot i stopped with my ear during sunday training that took place behind a pitch that had a mens game going on, on the plus side, i couldnt feel my ear for atleast a day.
when i played stockport under 19's the other defender, anthony kirkwood took three good sling shots to the short region! good technique, the ball never did come back out for a few mins. id it a few games in a row too! good job.

Taken one on the knee before, that was quite painful.
Was once playing a game and there were rib pads for me, trust it to be that game that someone wound up and launched a shot to just below my ribs. Took me a good few minutes to shake the pain of that one of. Had a massive bruise there as well.
Taken a couple to the top of the helmet/face mask but I agree that they are in general nothing.
