Re: LSM stick heads

Having played quite a bit of LSM, the Triton is my favorite. Better suited for a speed and finesse player, rather than a heavy hitter, as it will soften somewhat over time. Otherwise, for ground balls, clearing passes, and ball retention while dodging, I find the Triton hard to beat. Warrior Vice an...

Re: Goalies Stick length

40 inches is the "standard" goalie length shaft. By comparison, the standard short stick shaft is 30 inches. Although I'm shorter than moffat, I play with a longer shaft. I cut 2 inches off of a standard goalie shaft, just to avoid digging the butt end into the ground (a habit I've since o...

Re: Stepping to the ball

Spend time working on driving your bottom hand forward on EVERY shot. Not only will this put your stick in better position to control rebounds, the habit will help pull your body forward, helping you step to the ball on every shot. I had a similar habit for years- good stick-side and off-stick low, ...

The STX goalie heads are a bit harder to get cradling & dodging down. The Sentinel is a better for all-around utility, but in the long run the STX heads are the easiest to pass well with.

Take voice lessons in the off-season to learn how to best use your voice without losing it. Or try being in a musical in the off-season. Seriously!

A nice soft 8-diamond is my current love. Great pocket, good consistency, and as much whip as you want! If you want less whip, find a stiffer 8 diamond piece & string the same way.

A few new heads are out that look really good. Harrow's 1-piece goalie stick is good, but it might be too stiff to hold up against crank shots. Warrior's new ODB head is really all the best parts of the Big Nasty, minus those god-awful wings. Throw it on an STX 2-degree offset head & it should b...

I managed to get an early Freeze & have been playing with it. A couple of things to know: Yes, it does have a one-year warranty, like other heads. Really nice design. Does everything very well. VEEEEEEEEERY stiff!! This may be a problem against the really hard shots. No give whatsoever! For deta...

I'm a fan of the Gait Sentinel chest pad. Lots of padding, but not heavy. Also, it cuts in at the arms to allow good movement. Of the many goalies I've coached, they've nearly ALL gravitated to the Warrior MPG chest pad. Perfectly good padding without being excessive & all the optional shoulder ...

I have Gait Insanitys as goalie gloves & Gait Hyperflex as field gloves. Love them both. Had I been smarter, I would done it the opposite way. The wrist on the Insanity is more than necessary for goaltending, but the protection is phenomenol. Only concern- the Insanity is cut big & roomy. Wh...

Best bit of advice I can give: Before stringing sidewalls, run a string from an outermost bottom string hole in and out through the mesh holes up the side of the mesh to the outermost top string hole, then run it back down to the same bottom hole through the mesh the opposite way. Pull it TIGHT befo...

Depends what you're looking for

Pick the head based on what you're looking for: Help throwing- STX Exclipse & Guardian are the easiest to string up for great passing. They do tend to be the toughest to cradle & dodge with though. Help cradling/dodging- the offset on the Brine goalie heads (Xtreme, Money, & Eraser) make...

Difference in thumb tips

There's a big difference in thumb tip designs on goalie gloves. Warrior, STX (and Brine...sort of) have flat thumbs that still allow the ball to smack squarely on the end of the thumb. Most of the impact is still transferred in. Gait goalie gloves, older Brine goalie gloves (see Gels circa 2002/2003...

"Hi, honey- ready for your game now?...what do you mean you forgot your stick? I told you not to forget it...No, I don't have a backup with a short shaft on it!...No, I'm not gonna run home and get it!...Well, what do you expect me to do about it now?...Alright! Fine! HERE!! Use this. I'll see ...

(New to the forums, so pardon the late comment) When I started playing, I wore American football pants- thigh & knee pads only. They were minimal, didn't slow me down to any noticeable degree, and enabled me to focus on stopping shots, even after getting hit. A MAJOR bonus was that it encouraged...

This is a case where the US Lacrosse rules offer some insight. The ultimate issue is the pocket, shooting strings, etc. The US rulebook states that a goal can only be scored by "a legally strung field crosse" and obviously a mesh goalie pocket, with or without hockey lace shooting strings,...
